As reported by Gazzetta dello Sport, Lecce defender Samuel Umtiti was the victim of racist chanting during his team’s win over Lazio tonight, in another show of intolerance from Serie A stands, which left the former Lyon man in tears at the end of the game,

The French World Cup winner, who put in an impressive performance in the Apulians’ win, was subjected to the chanting along with his teammate, Zambian forward Lameck Banda. The match was interrupted for several minutes as the stadium announcer intervened, reacting to the chanting coming from the away stands. Eventually, it was drowned out by the home fans chanting the centre-back’s name.

Lecce president Saverio Sticchi Damiani, who embraced the Barcelona loanee at the end of the game, commented that the defender had asked for the game to resume following its interruption, as he wanted to respond to the insults with his performance on the pitch – “[…] He reacted like a true champion.”
