Elye Wahi celebrates his 20th Birthday on Monday, when Marseille visit Montpellier in Ligue 1 (18:00 UK) – and apart from Kylian Mbappé, no one has scored more goals than him in Ligue 1 at his age over the past 40 years. In an interview with L’Équipe, the young Montpellier star reacted to this statistic and spoke about following the footsteps of Kylian Mbappé and Karim Benzema (who scored two less at his age) as a talent in Ligue 1.
Wahi said that it was “an honour and a pride to be able to match great players and great men like them (Mbappé & Benzema)” saying that “to have passed one and be behind the other it feels good”. However the youngster explained that he has not quite let it sink in, that he “takes time to realise things because everything has happened quickly since the beginning of my young career”.
Since his debut in Ligue 1, Wahi has scored 20 goals in France’s top tier – with only Kylian Mbappé on 41 goals ahead of him among top scorers before the age of 20. Wahi overtook Karim Benzema’s young record by two goals, as the current Ballon d’Or winner scored 18 goals before reaching 20-years-old.
