Montpellier’s match against Nantes this afternoon was momentarily interrupted in the first half amid fan unrest. Tensions were high at Stade de la Mosson as Montpellier, a normally reliable mid-table outfit, are this time embroiled in a relegation-battling season. In the last few days, the Hérault outfit suffered an embarassing defeat against Ligue 2 contenders Pau (1-2) in the Coupe de France and a humbling away at Nice (1-6). Nantes made it three losses in a row for MHSC.

During this Sunday’s home game against thirteenth-placed side Nantes, Montpellier’s most ardent fans group “La Butte Paillade” organised a strike movement during the first fifteen minutes. Then, they stormed the stands, throwing flares and firecrackers on the pitch. Referee Thomas Leonard had no choice but to interrupt the game, sending the players back to their dressing rooms. Fifteen minutes later, the game resumed. Unfortunately for Montpellier, the Romain Pitau-led team made matters even more difficult for themselves as Tunisian forward Wahbi Khazri (31) was sent off following a clumsy high foot that hit Nantes’ Nathan Zeze (17) in the neck. Nantes’ Brazilian centre-back Andrei Girotto (30) piled the misery on the hosts by scoring a long-range screamer in the thirteenth minute of added time.
In the second half, Montpellier’s promising forward Elye Wahi (20) received back-to-back yellow cards, leaving his teammates with two players short. Nantes pounced as Egyptian forward Mostafa Mohamed (25) slammed home with a clever outside-of-the-boot finish following a Mamadou Sakho (32) blunder. Les Canaris‘ attacking midfielder Ludovic Blas (25) made it three thanks to a simple one-two with Sébastien Corchia (32) at the heart of an abysmal MHSC defence, capping off a nightmare of a Sunday for Montpellier. Hard times are coming for the 2012 Ligue 1 champions.
