Martin Terrier opened up scoring for Rennes in their 2-1 win over Nice before being brought off with a knee injury. The supporters in Roazhon Park held their breath as their star winger was helped off of the pitch. Even his teammates felt the shift in energy after the injury. Benjamin Bourigeaud recounted the moment stating, “After his injury, we got together to say that we were going to play for himWhen he came out, I shook his hand. He told me to win the game. I told him we would do it for him. We felt sad and downcast in the locker room. It can be serious.

The winger has always been a promising player, but he has truly come into his prime under head coach Bruno Genesio. The Lyon-born coach explained,  “It’s the big downside of the evening. We will have more news tomorrow (Tuesday), So far it’s a swollen knee. But it’s never very good when a knee turns and swells like that.”

Losing a key player in the middle of a game causes disruption to the flow of the match. It can be a moment that breaks a team’s spirit or inspires them to fight for their injured comrade. The coach added, “When a player is injured like that, we feel that it is quite serious, emotionally, it is difficult. At the break, all the players went to see Martin to comfort him. I left a moment of calm, then I came back to things that we had to correct. And we were able to get back into it in a second with a lot of quality and intensity.”

Even with all of the talent available on the Brittany club’s roster, a possible loss of Terrier would be a huge blow to their efforts to make it into one of the top 3 places in Ligue 1. In sixteen matches the French winger has 9 goals and 4 assists. Finding someone who can give you that type of production is no easy task.

When asked the coach stated, “Replacing Martin, finding players of this quality in the transfer window, it is impossible. We will think, ask ourselves, and wait for the medical verdict. But there are players capable of compensating for its absence, or the possibility of a different system (4-3-3). We will reflect on what we will do. Jérémy Doku, Kamaldeen Sulemana and Désiré Doué will no doubt have the opportunity to show themselves more.”
