Dimitri Payet says he wants to finish his career at Marseille

Payet rejoined Marseille in 2017 after a season-and-a-half at West Ham United. The former France international has a contract that runs until 2024, and he has no intention of leaving the club. Payet, who has made 314 appearances for Les Phocéens, scoring 76 goals and registering 95 assists during that time, intends to see out the rest of his career at the Orange Vélodrome.

I don’t want to leave. I want to stay and finish here. The challenge is exciting and I’m up to it,” he said. Payet, capped 38 times by Les Bleus, was asked about a potential early retirement, before the expiry of his contract in 2024. He replied, “Only my body can decide if I continue or not. I’ll speak about it around a table with the Marseille board then.”

Payet had struggled to break into Igor Tudor’s Marseille side at the start of the season, with reports of the Frenchman having returned to pre-season overweight. However, Payet has featured more frequently since August, and started and captained Marseille to a comfortable 6-1 win against Toulouse on Thursday.
