Uli Hoeneß reveals all regarding Harry Kane’s transfer from Tottenham

In an interview with the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Bayern Munich’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß revealed all the details regarding Harry Kane’s transfer from Tottenham. He would even comment on who the alternative to the England captain would have been. 

Throughout the Harry Kane saga, Hoeneß was a leading member of Bayern’s sports committee – alongside club CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen – that was in constant negotiations with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy. After weeks of deliberation and constant rejection, it had seemed that Bayern had finally struck gold with the English club before Levy reconsidered.

“At midnight we had a verbal agreement, but at 2:50 it was called into question again,” admitted Hoeneß. He would continue by saying: “That night it was again about a larger amount. Jan then said: ‘Not a penny more!’ It took six hours for Levy to accept that we were stubborn about this and for the plane that had been waiting for Harry in Stansted that morning to finally take off.”

“Harry said that morning: ‘If we don’t have a solution by the evening, I’ll play for Tottenham on Sunday. And then it’s over, then I won’t sign a new contract at Tottenham and go on a free transfer next year.’” However, despite this frustrating setback, Levy would give Bayern and Kane the green light to make the move official for a fee of €100m with add-ons.

“Four years ago I could not have imagined that we would spend so much money on a player. Neither did I a year ago. But in life, you always have to be ready to reevaluate things. We have a season behind us with which we were absolutely not satisfied. A major reason was that we didn’t have a number nine,” remarked Hoeneß. 

The Bayern honorary president would reveal the true cost of the 30-year-old too: “The real cash sum that we are guaranteed to have to pay now is less than 100 million. But if we become German champions, for example, or win the Champions League, it can still rise.”

However, if a deal for Kane could not be found then the Rekordmiester would have turned their attention to Eintracht Frankfurt striker Randall Kolo Muani, who “would have liked us as an alternative too” according to Hoeneß. Nevertheless, Bayern got their man and after opening his account with an assist and a goal against Werder Bremen on matchday one, Kane will be looking to help push Bayern towards domestic and continental glory.
