Germany’s chances at the 2022 World Cup

Germany are one of the most successful teams in the World Cup, having lifted four trophies in the past. Moreover, they also have the distinction of winning three European Championship titles. 

The 2014 winners will start their World Cup campaign against Japan who are full of talented players and could prove to be difficult opponents for them. Die Mannschaft will then come up against Spain who are being regarded as one of the top favourites to win this tournament. Their World Cup 2022 Group E final game will see them crossing swords with Costa Rica at the start of December.

Germany’s chances at the World Cup

Germany have failed to make it to the quarter-finals only once in the previous 10 World Cups. However, they have been disappointing in the last two major tournaments. 

The 2014 winners exited the tournament in the group stage in 2018 after losing games against Mexico and South Korea. They were slightly better in Euro 2020 when they reached the knockouts but fell at the first hurdle to England. Joachim Low was sacked and Hansi Flick was installed in his place but they were not very convincing in the Europa League as they failed to reach the semi-finals. 

Many of the German players have not played in a World Cup before, and so this year will be their first experience in the prestigious tournament. These players include Antonio Rudiger, David Raum, Leroy Sane, Kai Havertz, Robin Gosens, Serge Gnabry and Niklas Sule. 

However, they have some veterans in the form of Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller who were also named in the squad. Neuer has made 114 appearances for the national side so far, while Muller was part of the team in three previous World Cups. 

Meanwhile, Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka were both part of the 2018 World Cup squad but they didn’t get much game time. However, they have seen great progress in their game since then, with the duo winning the Champions League with Bayern Munich in 2020. 

Considering the quality of their squad and their current form, Germany should make it to the knockouts but we don’t see them challenging Brazil, Argentina or France for the 2022 World Cup trophy.
