Sky Germany reports that Borussia Mönchengladbach are set to miss out on Young Boys attacking midfielder Fabian Rieder who is close to joining Rennes in France.
The 21-year-old is in advanced negotiations with Rennes and the club continues to push to sign Rieder who is keen on the move to Ligue 1. The fee is likely to be around €12m as Rieder’s contract expires in 2025 and the 21-year-old will replace Wolfsburg’s new midfielder Lovro Majer.
Gladbach had been heavily linked to Rieder for the majority of the summer but the signing of the 21-year-old was always dependent on outgoings. Gladbach had to sell Nico Elvedi as well as potentially Hannes Wolf to have the chance of paying the desired fee for Rieder but once again it looks like Gladbach will miss out on one of their transfer targets.
Missing out on Rieder not only highlights the financial issues that Gladbach are currently experiencing meaning they are unable to afford such a fee that other clubs around them are able to easily pay, but it also shows that the team that carries out the transfers lack ruthlessness when it comes to signing targets as the club have now missed out on a useful addition to the squad and someone who would of upgraded the Gladbach attack.
