Real Madrid have confirmed that centre-back Éder Militão has ruptured his ACL.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois suffered the same injury just two days before Madrid’s season opener, when he received the blow at the end of the club’s training session on Thursday.

On Saturday night, the Brazilian defender slipped and suffered the injury early in the second half of Madrid’s 2-0 win over Athletic Club at San Mamés. He left the field in tears and was replaced by German defender Antonio Rüdiger.

AS report that Militão is now set to miss up to nine months of action, ruling him out for the majority of the 2023-24 campaign.

Real Madrid’s statement read: “After the tests performed on our player Éder Militão, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee. The player will undergo surgery in the coming days.”

Real Madrid have until the end of August to sign another centre-back, however, the club are not expected to make any more moves in the transfer window, as Carlo Ancelotti has David Alaba, Rüdiger and Nacho to play centrally.
